3rd cascading phase
In the 3rd cascading phase MACRO CASCADE will develop a variety of efficient and robust carbohydrate active enzymes, with a range of specificities, for processing macroalgal polysaccharides. The resulting products will be evaluated by industry partners in the project.
They will be used for complete or selective degradation of polysaccharides
- during the pre-process fractionation stage requiring robust salt tolerant enzymes for reducing viscosity,
- to ease the extraction of small molecule, bioactive polyphenols or flavorants,
- for production of monosugars and/or oligosaccharide mixtures very early in the technology chain,
- for complete or partial targeted degradation marine polysaccharides at a later stage for manufacture of a of pure monosugars and specialty products.
Targeted enzymatic derivatives of alginate from brown algae include:
Oligosaccharides as feed components, (less viscosity and health promoting effects)
Purified high quality alginate-oligosaccharides as food supplements.
Alginate oligosaccharides enriched in guluronate-blocks for feed (and or food) – antibiotic effect – health promoting
Targeted enzymatic derivatives of laminarin from Brown algae include:
Potent health promoting branched laminari oligosachcharides that can be used in functional food products without causing drastic changes in texture of the product (e.g. beverages) in contrast to the viscous β-glucan polysaccharides.
Complete break-down of laminarin to glucosein silage fermentation
Targeted prebiotic oligosaccharides by fragmentation and enzymatic glycosylation of polysaccharides from Red and Green algae.
Natural oligosaccharides such as galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS), fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS), mannan oligosaccharides (MOS), and recently xylooligosaccharides (XOS) show prebiotic properties. Major application sectors include food and beverages, but animal feed has not yet been fully developed.
