Deliverable 3.1

The third project objective intended to develop patentable feed and food products with health promoting functionalities through innovative microbial refining methods of macroalgae in combination with rape seed.

Fermentation Experts A/S took the lead on MACRO CASCADE Deliverable 3.1, which explored the opportunity to convert algae into a nutritious feed additive with improved digestibility (greater than 25%). They concluded a 2-step fermentation process is effective in releasing the nutritious potential of seaweed when used in combination with rapeseed meal. They also assessed optimal grind size for the seaweed that allows the bacteria to more easily break down cell walls.
