Deliverable 4.1

Task 4 intended to develop scalable and sustainable extraction/separation methods for the production of multiple products from brown and red seaweeds or seaweeds residues by enzyme aided physicochemical methods. More specifically, the targeted intermediate products were alginate, fucoidan, mannitol and protein.

As another critical partner in the MACRO CASCADE Project, Wageningen University and Research designed a biorefinery approach for the production of alginate-rich, fucoidan-rich and protein-rich fractions. Although the processing strategy was deemed technically feasible, the approach still requires some equipment modifications in order to maximize the efficiency of the biorefinery process.
